Prisoner Awareness & Rehabilitation Courses

Prisoner Awareness & Rehabilitation Courses

Challenging Thinking. Building Responsibility. Creating Opportunities for Change.

SEETE designs and delivers engaging awareness, personal development and rehabilitation courses for people in custody.

Our programmes combine structured learning with authentic lived experience of crime, imprisonment, rehabilitation and reintegration, creating an environment where participants can examine their choices, attitudes, behaviour and aspirations honestly.

We do not believe lasting change comes simply from telling somebody not to offend again.

Our programmes encourage people to understand how they got where they are, who has been affected by their choices, what needs to change and what they can do differently in the future.

Rehabilitation Through Understanding & Responsibility

People arrive in prison through different circumstances and with very different experiences.

For some, offending may have become normalised through lifestyle, relationships, environment or repeated involvement with the criminal justice system.

Others may struggle with impulsivity, identity, relationships, substance misuse, confidence, decision-making or understanding the wider consequences of their behaviour.

SEETE's programmes create structured opportunities for participants to explore these issues without excusing offending or defining an individual solely by their past.

Our approach is based around three questions:

What brought me here?

What needs to change?

What am I going to do differently?

More Than Awareness

Awareness is important, but awareness by itself does not necessarily create change.

That is why SEETE courses are designed to move participants from awareness towards reflection, responsibility and practical action.

Depending upon the programme, participants may explore:

  • Decision-making
  • Consequences
  • Personal responsibility
  • Criminal thinking
  • Identity
  • Relationships
  • Communication
  • Emotional awareness
  • Impulsivity
  • Conflict
  • Substance misuse
  • Peer influence
  • Family impact
  • Values and beliefs
  • Motivation
  • Goal setting
  • Resilience
  • Positive role models
  • Preparing for release
  • Building a different future

Participants are encouraged to connect learning to their own experiences and future choices.

The Power of Lived Experience

Credibility Can Open the Door to Learning

One of SEETE's strengths is our ability to combine professional programme delivery with credible lived experience of the criminal justice system.

People in custody can sometimes disengage when they believe somebody is talking at them rather than engaging with them.

Lived experience can help break down that initial barrier.

It can create the credibility needed to begin a conversation.

But SEETE does not use lived experience to glorify offending or entertain participants with stories about crime.

We use it purposefully.

Personal experiences become opportunities to explore:

choices

consequences

relationships

lost opportunities

responsibility

rehabilitation

and change.

The story opens the conversation.

The learning is what matters.

SEETE Prisoner Programmes

SEETE can deliver standalone courses or develop a package of interventions around an establishment's needs.

Choices & Consequences

A reflective programme examining how seemingly small decisions can lead to increasingly serious consequences.

Participants consider patterns in their own decision-making and explore how different choices could produce different outcomes.

Topics can include:

  • Decision-making
  • Impulsivity
  • Peer influence
  • Consequences
  • Personal responsibility
  • Future thinking

Criminal Thinking & Changing Mindsets

A programme encouraging participants to identify attitudes, beliefs and thinking patterns that may contribute to harmful or offending behaviour.

Rather than simply telling participants what to think, the course encourages them to question their own thinking.

Topics can include:

  • Justification
  • Minimising behaviour
  • Blaming others
  • Entitlement
  • Risk and reward
  • Identity
  • Thinking before acting
  • Developing alternative responses

Victim Awareness & Wider Consequences

Crime rarely affects only the person who commits it.

This programme encourages participants to consider the wider consequences of offending upon:

  • Victims
  • Families
  • Children
  • Partners
  • Communities
  • Relationships
  • Employment
  • Their own future

The purpose is not to shame participants.

It is to develop greater awareness of impact, empathy and personal responsibility.

Relationships, Respect & Communication

A practical programme exploring how communication, trust, boundaries and conflict affect relationships.

Participants can examine:

  • Healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • Communication
  • Listening
  • Respect
  • Boundaries
  • Conflict
  • Trust
  • Emotional responses
  • Responsibility within relationships

These skills can be relevant both within custody and when rebuilding relationships following release.

Identity, Purpose & Positive Change

For people who have spent significant periods involved in offending or imprisonment, criminal identity can become deeply established.

This programme explores the question:

If crime is no longer going to define me, what will?

Participants consider identity, values, strengths, aspirations, positive roles and what a meaningful future could look like.

Can a Leopard Change Its Spots?

Challenging the Belief That People Cannot Change

One of the most damaging beliefs a person can develop is that their past determines their future.

“This is just who I am.”

“I've always been like this.”

“People like me don't change.”

SEETE's Can a Leopard Change Its Spots? programme challenges those assumptions.

Using lived experience, discussion and structured exercises, participants explore the difference between who somebody has been and who they choose to become.

The programme examines responsibility without pretending the past did not happen.

The central message is simple:

You cannot change what you have already done.

You can influence what you do next.

Happiness Forgets What Loneliness Remembers

Exploring the Hidden Cost of Crime

People often remember the excitement, money, status or lifestyle associated with offending more easily than they remember its consequences.

SEETE's Happiness Forgets What Loneliness Remembers programme turns the focus towards what crime can cost.

Participants are encouraged to consider:

  • Years lost in custody
  • Separation from children
  • Broken relationships
  • Missing important family events
  • Isolation
  • Loss of trust
  • Lost employment and opportunities
  • Starting again after release
  • The impact of repeated imprisonment

The programme does not rely on fear.

It encourages participants to make a more honest assessment of whether the perceived rewards of offending were ever worth the actual price.

Preparing for Release & Staying Out

Release from prison creates opportunity, but it can also bring uncertainty and pressure.

This programme helps participants think practically about the transition from custody into the community.

Topics can include:

  • Accommodation
  • Employment
  • Family relationships
  • Finances
  • Substance misuse and recovery
  • Positive networks
  • Avoiding previous influences
  • Managing setbacks
  • Asking for help
  • Goal setting
  • Building routine
  • Personal responsibility

Where appropriate, this programme can connect with SEETE's wider Prison Leaver Accommodation & Resettlement Pathway.

Courses Tailored to the Establishment

Every prison population is different.

SEETE can therefore work with establishments to adapt delivery around identified needs.

Programmes may be suitable for:

Main residential populations

ISFL residents

Enhanced prisoners

Peer mentors

People approaching release

Young adults

Long-term prisoners

People repeatedly returning to custody

and other cohorts identified by the establishment.

Course length, group size and content can be discussed as part of the commissioning process.

How We Deliver

SEETE programmes are designed to be interactive rather than lecture-based.

Delivery can incorporate:

  • Facilitated group discussion
  • Lived experience
  • Practical exercises
  • Individual reflection
  • Scenarios
  • Group activities
  • Role play where appropriate
  • Goal setting
  • Learner workbooks
  • Pre- and post-course feedback
  • Completion certificates
  • Accredited learning where applicable

The intention is to make participants active contributors to their learning rather than passive recipients of information.

Measuring Impact

Demonstrating More Than Attendance

SEETE believes commissioners should be able to understand what participants gained from a programme.

Depending upon the course and commissioning requirements, evaluation can include:

  • Attendance
  • Completion
  • Learner engagement
  • Pre- and post-course questionnaires
  • Knowledge gained
  • Changes in attitudes or confidence
  • Participant feedback
  • Facilitator observations
  • Personal action plans
  • Accreditation or certification achieved
  • Staff feedback
  • Follow-up reviews where commissioned

SEETE can provide a post-programme delivery and outcomes report to the commissioning establishment.

Working Alongside Existing HMPPS Interventions

SEETE's awareness and personal development programmes are designed to complement, not replace, specialist statutory or HMPPS-accredited interventions.

Where participants require specialist treatment, risk-management interventions or an HMPPS-accredited offending behaviour programme, those needs should continue to be addressed through the appropriate professional service.

SEETE's role is to provide engaging supplementary learning and lived-experience-led development that can support wider rehabilitation.

Connecting Our Services

SEETE's prisoner courses can also be combined with our other specialist services.

Participants demonstrating appropriate skills and motivation may progress towards:

Accredited Prisoner Mentor Training

Prisoners living within recovery environments can benefit from programmes delivered alongside:

ISFL Consultancy & Implementation

People approaching release can connect learning with:

Prison Leaver Accommodation & Resettlement

And establishments seeking broader cultural development can combine prisoner programmes with:

Cultural Awareness Training for Prison Staff

This enables SEETE to support different stages of the rehabilitation journey rather than delivering isolated interventions.

Turning Lived Experience Into Learning

SEETE believes people's past experiences can become either a reason to remain where they are or knowledge that helps them move forward.

Our programmes provide participants with an opportunity to examine where they have been, what they have learned and where they want to go next.

We combine lived experience with structured learning to create conversations that are credible, challenging and focused on positive change.

Accredited Awareness & Offender Development Courses

Helping Individuals Understand Behaviour, Make Positive Choices and Build Better Futures

At SEETE (Securing Enabling Environments Through Empowerment), we believe that lasting change begins with understanding.

Many individuals involved in the criminal justice system have experienced complex life circumstances, trauma, negative influences, and environments that have shaped their decision-making and behaviour. While personal responsibility remains essential, meaningful rehabilitation requires opportunities to reflect, learn, and develop the skills needed to make different choices in the future.

SEETE has developed a range of Awareness and Offender Development Courses designed to help individuals understand the causes and consequences of offending behaviour while building confidence, resilience, and positive decision-making skills.

Our programmes are designed and delivered by experienced facilitators, including individuals with relevant lived experience who understand the realities, pressures, and challenges that many participants have faced.

Why Our Courses Are Different

SEETE's courses are built around credibility, engagement, and real-life learning.
