Accredited Mentor Training Programme

Transforming Lived Experience into Leadership, Rehabilitation, and Community Impact

Building Safer Prisons, Stronger Communities, and Brighter Futures

The Accredited Mentor Training Programme is a unique rehabilitation and leadership development pathway designed to equip serving prisoners and ex-prisoners with the skills, knowledge, and qualifications needed to become effective mentors both within prison and in the wider community.

The programme recognises that individuals with lived experience often possess a powerful ability to connect with, motivate, and inspire others who may be facing similar challenges. Through structured training, supervised practice, and nationally recognised accreditation, participants develop the professional competencies required to mentor safely, ethically, and effectively.

Whether supporting individuals within an ISFL unit or other locations within prison, helping prisoners prepare for release, or working with young people in schools and community settings, our mentors become agents of positive change.

An Accredited Pathway to Personal and Professional Development

The programme provides participants with an accredited qualification in mentoring, enabling them to gain recognised skills that support rehabilitation, employability, and progression into further education, training, voluntary work, or paid employment.

Participants complete a comprehensive 10-module programme covering:

  • The Role of a Mentor
  • Communication and Listening Skills
  • Trauma, Behaviour and Change
  • Boundaries, Ethics and Safeguarding
  • Mentoring within the ISFL Unit and other wings
  • Working with Young People in Schools
  • Reflective Practice and Resilience
  • Employability and Career Progression
  • Professional Practice and Case Management
  • Leadership, Role Modelling and Community Impact

Upon successful completion, learners receive an accredited qualification and a portfolio of evidence demonstrating their mentoring competence.

Mentoring Within Prison

The programme is designed to support rehabilitation and positive culture change within custodial settings.

Trained mentors can provide support to individuals who may be struggling with:

  • Behavioural challenges
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Prison adjustment
  • Motivation and engagement
  • Preparation for release
  • Education and personal development

Within ISFL units, mentors work alongside prison staff and multidisciplinary teams to provide structured peer support, helping to create safer and more supportive environments.

Benefits for prisons include:

  • Improved prisoner engagement
  • Increased participation in education and interventions
  • Positive peer influence
  • Reduced conflict and behavioural incidents
  • Enhanced rehabilitation outcomes
  • Improve staff and prisoner relationships

Mentoring Beyond Prison

One of the programme's key strengths is its ability to create a pathway from custody into meaningful community contribution.

Following release, qualified mentors can continue using their skills in a range of settings including:

Schools

Why Lived Experience Matters

Research consistently demonstrates that people are more likely to engage with support when it is delivered by someone who genuinely understands their experiences.

Our mentors use their personal journeys responsibly and professionally to:

  • Build trust
  • Inspire hope
  • Challenge negative thinking
  • Encourage accountability
  • Promote positive choices

The programme ensures that lived experience is used safely, ethically, and constructively through robust safeguarding, supervision, and professional standards.

Accreditation and Quality Assurance

All training is delivered through an accredited framework and is supported by:

  • Qualified trainers
  • Structured assessment
  • Supervised mentoring practice
  • Professional supervision
  • Safeguarding compliance
  • Ongoing quality assurance

Learners complete written assessments, reflective practice activities, observed mentoring sessions, and supervised practice hours to demonstrate competency.

  • Peer Mentor Roles
  • Youth Support Work
  • Community Outreach
